| Professional Memberships Bellaire High School is a member of the several professional organizations including: National Forensic League (NFL) Founded in 1925, Bellaire High School joined NFL February 16, 1957 during the first year of operation of our school. Our NFL chapter history shows the success we have had in this organization. NFL offers a system of incentives for students to participate in debate and forensics. Students may earn points in accordance with their success at tournaments. After a student earns over 25 points he/she is eligible for membership in NFL. The points are cummulative for the students career. Only NFL members are allowed to compete in NFL District tournaments (which qualify for the NFL National Speech & Debate tournament). Prominent NFL alumni include President Lyndon Johnson, Vice President Hubert Humphrey, Academy Award winner Don Ameche, Emmy Award winner Daniel J. Travanti, actress Shelly Long, television host Oprah Winfrey, news anchor Jane Pauley, Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer and thousands of other leaders in politics, business, education, law and public service. Since its founding in 1925, NFL has enrolled over 1.2 million members in all fifty states, U.S. possessions and several foreign countries. Currently over 95,000 high school students and over 3,000 high school teachers are active members. Further information about the National Forensic League can be found at http://www.nflonline.org National Catholic Forensic League (NCFL) The National Catholic Forensic League is a group of schools representing most of the United States that promotes debate and forensics for high school students. Each year our school rejoins this organization as part of the Houston-Galveston diocese. This means that any student who participates in debate is eligible to participate in an NCFL National Qualifying tournament. Texas Forensic Association (TFA) TFA is a statewide organization that was founded in 1972 and hosts the largest State speech debate tournament in the nation. High schools across the state apply each year to be TFA State qualifying tournaments. Students who place in these tournaments earn TFA State points. When a student/s earns 8 TFA State points in a given event, they have qualified to participate in the TFA State tournament. The location of the tournament rotates between each of the five TFA regions. University Interscholastic League (UIL) UIL is a statewide organization founded in 1910 and has grown into the largest interschool organization of its kind in the world. UIL exists to provide extracurricular academic, athletic, and music contests. The 96th Annual Cross Examination Debate State Tournament to be hosted by UIL in March, 2006 is the longest running State Championship in the country. |
